Leaves are falling in Wisconsin (where half of Team Splasm lives). The rustle of orange and red lets us know that winter is coming soon. Yet, while bears are hunkering down for hibernation, Splasm Software is crackling with life. In Birmingham, Splasm's home base, the Primordial Sea Captain has set sail into the ocean of resumés to find two new additions to man the rigs and batten down the hatches!

That's right, we are looking for new blood. Keith, Randy, and I are ready to share the creativity, drive, and exciting work environment with two motivated individuals. For more details check out our employment notice.

CheckBook and CheckBook Pro 2.3: Reconcile With Style

CheckBook has a shiny new Reconcile button! How many times have you reconciled in CheckBook, but later, somehow, an Entry or two from way back lost their Resolved status and threw off your Resolved Balance? Well, that is a thing of the past. CheckBook 2.3 has gained the capability to lock those Amounts and Resolved statuses. Updates are free for licensed 2.x users, so start enjoying the new Reconcile button and a few other goodies and fixes today!

One of the most notable happenings since our last newsletter was a sad one: the passing of a great man.

Steve Jobs was a role model to developers and users alike. Those who heard him speak were inspired by his drive, creativity, and fierce loyalty to his own vision--even or perhaps especially in the face of failure. Inventing products that lived up to his own standards weighed more than the expectations of those around him. He existed in a plane above ordinary.

Splasm Software would not be the company it is today without the dedicated individual who drove Apple to create such high quality products. In an interview with BusinessWeek Steve shared some information about his creative process.

"That's been one of my mantras--focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex. You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it's worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains."

Creating products that are clean and simple and help users in their day to day has long been the gooey substance of Splasm's vision. Having the opportunity to make apps like CheckBook, which simplifies financial management, is something we are deeply thankful for.

Steve Jobs' approach to usability changed the software industry and made it possible for companies like us to exist and grow. We will miss waiting anxiously for his keynotes to begin. We will miss the way he strutted up to the stage, wearing all black so that our attention was acutely focused on the stunning new device about to be unveiled. We will miss all that Steve brought to the desktop, the laptop, the iPhone...the list could go on and on.

Why the most amazing people pass all too soon will always be a mystery. All we can really do is appreciate all Steve Jobs was able to give us with the time he had. And be inspired to give it all we've got while we are here.

Keith recently outlined CheckBook's new features for interacting with Split Line Items. Here's some of the backstory:

"Facing the tough questions: How do we handle Parent Entry Amounts and Split Line Item Amounts in a file that may be viewed in a spreadsheet? What if the user wants to SUM or throw some other math on the Amount column? SUMming the Parent Entry Amounts should equal the total of the export. SUMming the Split Line Item Amounts should equal the same (unless there's a QuickFilter or Smart Folder in there somewhere.) SUMming both, then, would potentially equal up to twice the total of the export (not every Entry is a Split, and a Starting Balance could affect things, too)…" (Read More)

Terra reviewed two money saving web sites to help in the continuing mission that is financial management.

"Though eating is a worthy expenditure, it would be nice to spend a little less on food. After breaking down the price of pancakes, I found myself searching for similar breakdowns of meal costs. A friend sent me this Lifehacker article about how to make pizza for $0.38 a serving. The article referenced two money-saving blogs: Cents to Share and The Simple Dollar." (Read More)
