Post subject:  "Error: unknown error" when updating to 2.5.7

A few folks have reported an error message that ends with "Error: unknown error" when updating to CheckBook or CheckBook Pro 2.5.7. This will happen when the update process sees a rare condition in your document that leads it to perform a little database maintenance. It doesn't understand that the maintenance was successful, gets confused, and reports an unknown error. Here's how to get back up and running:

If you use CheckBook

  1. Click this link: http://www.splasm.com/special/checkbook ... .5.8a1.zip
  2. Click the Finder icon in your Dock, go to the Go menu at the top of your screen, and click the Downloads menu item to go to your Downloads folder.
  3. Look for CheckBook 2.5.8a1 in the Downloads folder and double-click it. A new file named CheckBook, with the familiar checkbook, credit card, and pen icon, will appear.
  4. Double-click the CheckBook icon. Under normal circumstances you should be prompted to update the document, and when you click the Update button you should see your data.
  5. If you encounter a message stating the application can't be opened because it was not downloaded from the Mac App Store, please visit https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202491 for help setting Gatekeeper to allow applications from identified developers to open.

At this point, you won't even need to use the new build anymore, because your document is updated and the version you downloaded before receiving the error will work just fine going forward. You can quit and throw the CheckBook files in your Downloads folder in the Trash. Make sure you put only the files named CheckBook and CheckBook 2.5.8a1.zip from your Downloads folder into the Trash.

If you use CheckBook Pro
