bringing a cd in as a single file merges all the tracks on that cd into 1 file. Audiobook Builder cannot divide a single audio file into multiple chapters, so it limits your ability to place multiple chapters in the audio from that cd. if you import as individual files, it will import the cd with individual files for each track on that cd. It allows you to break up those cds if there are more than one chapter on that cd and you want to have them each with their own chapter marker.
The split button is at the top of the window while in the chapters tab of Audiobook Builder. You can divide a a chapter which has multiple audio files in it into all the individual files contained in that chapter. for example, All cds are brought in as one chapter by default with all the tracks of that cd within that chapter.
it sounds a bit confusing but it really isn't too bad. In short, if you are not reorganizing your audiobooks and are fine with 1 chapter per cd, you can use the single file option. If you want to bust up the cd into multiple chapters, use the individual files option.
