Maybe I am missing something, but it would be useful if you could do a plot (bar graph) by category with a bar for each month. I know that it sort of does that now, but there are too many lines of text. I just want to see a bar (column) for each month.

A monthly pie chart would also be useful, showing the proportions of each category of spending.

I like that I can have multiple accounts (credit cards, chequing, etc.) and can accumulate categories across all these accounts (which is why I selected this product), but I want an easy way to view this information.

With the Summary options, it's certainly possible to generate a report by Category with the bar graph information showing the monthly subtotals. Pie charts, however, aren't yet available but we hope to get those added eventually.

Anyway, it seems like you're just looking to limit the Summary information at this point. So, to get what you're looking for, either hit the New or Change button at the top of the Summary section to get started. On the Summary options sheet, you'll just want to make sure that just 'Category' is checked off under the Subtotal area and that the 'Subtotal Per' setting shows 'Monthly'.

Thanks for the reply. I have been busy and unable to get back to the program till today. When I follow what you indicate I get this:

What I am looking for is a bar chart with month name (or date range is OK, but month name preferred), a variable length bar and amount shown, and that is all. I could do this by exporting to Excel, but it is a lot of work, and having a quickly accessed summary chart is what I'd like to see.

Am I still missing something?

A vertical bar chart would be preferred, but horizontal is fine too.

Thanks

Unfortunately, where you're looking for the bars for each month to be relative to one another isn't doable. Currently, the bar graphing is intended for making comparisons between different field designations within a given subtotaling period. So, you could compare what was spent on Dining Out for the month with some other Category easily. But, within a subtotaling period it'll be the Category that the highest Amount was spent on that uses a full bar, so that's why the bars are the same in your screenshot.

Perhaps we'll look into providing an alternate view option for Summaries in order to have bar graphing relative within an entire Summary. That would have to come in a future release, though.

Fair enough. What I was looking to do was monitor spending by category on a month-month basis. What I really like about your program, and the reason that I bought it was that I could total categories across accounts (i.e. a couple of credit cards and a debit account), because the category is what's important to me, not the account per se. Most of the other programs that I looked at treated each category for each account as a separate entity, and the only way to get a total for any category was to manually add up the totals.

Advanced charting would be a boon, making it easier to visually spot patterns.

Thanks for the response, and I'll wait to see what develops.
