I've yet to determine why I can't enter my statement balance. I've cleared the searches, switched between entry and reconciling, reset unreconciled entries and there are times I still can't enter my statement balance...then again it works perfectly the first time I try. Sometimes I just wait a while and then I can enter the Statement Balance. I do not understand the difference. Can someone help, please?

I'm using a MacBook Pro, OS X 10.9.4

There shouldn't be any reason why the Statement Balance field would initially be unresponsive unless something's bogging down overall responsiveness. Are you finding that everything else in the application works as expected to except the Statement Balance field? And, when you click or double-click into the field and wait a while does what's typed ever show up?
