What you’re dealing with could be related to an Open panel issue with App Store versions of CheckBook (Pro) running on Mavericks that can cause hangs. Luckily, to work around that, it’s possible to navigate to the file and double-click it to open it. Since you’re saying you have a copy in Downloads, try double-clicking that. Or, here's what to do to access your iCloud document on your Mac:
1. Click the Finder icon in your Dock.
2. Go to the Go menu at the top of your screen and click the Go to Folder... menu item. A window or sheet will appear with a Go to folder field.
3. Paste the following into the Go to folder field, including the tilde (~) at the very beginning, and click the Go button:
~/Library/Mobile Documents/KQZ94N9248~com~splasm~checkbook/Documents
4. Look for your document file’s name and double-click it. It should open in CheckBook Pro and you're all set from there.
