I'm trying out the software and like it. But when I imported a QIF file I downloaded from my Chase checking account the information in the To/From field is cut off at the end.

This makes it so I can't tell who the check was to!

Any tips? Would using a different file type help?

Thank you,
Doug

Certain fields shouldn't get cut off during an import, although the column view could be hiding part of the field if the column's too small to squeeze all the text in. Try widening your To/From column to see if that helps. To do that, hover over the right-side of the To/From column header (the actual rectangle that says 'To/From' on it at the top of the column). When the cursor turns into two opposing arrows, click and drag over to increase the column size.

Hopefully that'll do the trick!

Thank you for the reply. I had already tried what you suggested, but it didn't show any more of the text. The text in the To/From field is just truncated...incomplete.

See attached pdf image to see what I mean.

Thank you,
Doug

Thanks for attaching the screenshot, Doug! That looks like the original file included truncated versions of those fields because CheckBook always truncates with the ellipsis at the end. The easiest way to check the fields in the actual file is to open the QIF in TextEdit. In there, each Entry will show up with carriage returns between individual fields and a caret symbol (^) at the bottom of each Entry chunk, with the To/From fields being differentiated by a "P" preceding the actual information text for that field. So, look for "POnline Transfer to CHK ...5259 t" somewhere in the file and, if it appears just like that, it means the bank is saving that field as that shortened version.

I opened the QIF file in TextEdit, and you were right: the truncating is showing up there.

What do you suggest? Have other customers of Checkbook had this problem? I can't be the only Chase customer using Checkbook, right? :)

Thank you for any more suggestions,
Doug

I just answered my own question. I downloaded a CSV file from my bank...and it imported perfectly without any cutting off of the To/From information!

I think I might just go buy this application!

It's great to hear that the cutoffs were just in the QIF file and that importing a CSV did the trick! We hope you do buy a copy!

Yes, I've bought the regular version: Checkbook.

Case closed!
