Thank you, everyone, for all your help so far. We're really excited to see such a great response!

We're planning to give some feedback later today about the suggestions we've received. That'll give you guys a feeling for the types of names that strike us as marketable. As we go along we might keep you updated on what we think are the top five, so you'll know who to top with your own ideas.

Keep the names coming!

How about WizaVid or VideWiz or Merlin? After all, your product is magic! :) AND just replace the cowboy hat with a Wizard's hat.

Hey all,

We over at Kainjow LLC (makers of Pod2Go) are in the same boat as you are. Not really looking forward to rebranding after being one of the oldest iPod programs around, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do (to avoid the wrath of Steve) ;)

Good luck with finding a new name for Podner!

My first suggestion is to ask Apple to let you keep the current name. I make my case for this below (#3). However, assuming the worse, I have a couple other suggestions too.

1. iPod Movie Mover

(Boring, but self-explanatory. My skimming of Apple's guidelines suggest that this name might be allowed, because it references their product name without diluting their trademark. Obviously you'd want to clear it with them first.)

2. MovieMover

(There's already s/w called Movie Mover, though it looks more like an unmarketed PC freeware utility.)

3. Podner (or PodNer, or podNer)

Okay, here's my defense of the current name. Looking in the Macintosh Products Guide I see podFlicks, iPodLauncher, MaxPod, PodQuest... The list goes on and on.

PodQuest is a particularly good example, it has the universal binary logo!

So I would politely respond to Apple's email and ask for clarification about what specific guideline Podner violates that PodQuest and the other names do not. Make it clear that you have read the guidelines and are trying your best to follow them. If it's simply a matter of capitalizing the N (PodNer) or lower-casing the P (podNer) to make it more like other examples in their product database then you can do that. Or ask if it works if you reference the iPod trademark separately like some products do: "Podner (for iPod)"

I think someone at Apple simply made a judgement call on the name Podner and got it wrong. But if there is in fact a useful difference they can articulate to you, that would be useful. Then maybe a small tweak to the old name would suffice.

You've probably already communicated with Apple as much as you'd like to, but if you feel that a cordial question to them would not go amiss, then that's my suggestion. (You are going to have to talk to them anyway if you pick a new name; you should get Apple to pass judgement on it before you go through the hassle of renaming your software.)

Good luck!
Matt

Polish as in Apple polish.

Hal as in "Open the pod bay doors"

Rhinestone as in Rhinestone Cowboy

Tumbleweed

Another word for Wrangling is Herd, so maybe video Herd.

Or stay with Video Wrangler.

Ramrod, as the head cowboy in a cattle drive.
