Hi, Does Podner use the Quicktime encoding engine or does it use the x264 etc? I think QT produces better looking files. Many thanks. Nubben |

Podner encodes using QuickTime's MPEG-4 and H.264 components. We agree that QuickTime can produce better-looking files than say, what we see with tools that use ffmpeg and x264. Overall, QuickTime's output tends to be sharper and its color more closely matches the original source. |

Thanks for your quick reply Keith! Since QT uses 7.0.4 and 1-pass encoding these days (with "Convert to iPod") option, I was wondering if Podner will enable me to go back to "old" QT 7.0.3-style of encoding which used 2-pass? Also, what encoding specs does a 2-pass or multipass encoding contain in terms of bitrate (both video and sound) etc? Many thanks again. Nubben |

Podner does indeed provide iPod-compatible H.264 MultiPass, almost identical to the "old" QuickTime 7.0.3. Podner's H.264 MultiPass, Best Quality, matches QuickTime 7.0.3 by specifying a data rate of 600Kbps. Custom settings that include MultiPass will most likely not be iPod-compatible. Below is a list of Podner's data rates and audio specs. iPod, MPEG-4, 320x240: Good: 512Kbps Better: 768Kbps Best: 1Mbps iPod, MPEG-4, 480x480: Good: 1Mbps Better: 1.5Mbps Best: 2Mbps iPod, H.264, including MultiPass: Good: 320Kbps Better: 480Kbps Best: 600Kbps Podcast, H.264, including Multipass: Good: 160Kbps Better: 196Kbps Best: 256Kbps Podner specifies 16-bit, stereo, 44.1KHz AAC at 128Kbps for all iPod Encoding presets. It specifies the following for the Podcast presets: Good: 16-bit, mono, 44.1KHz AAC at 64Kbps Better: 16-bit, mono, 44.1KHz AAC at 96Kbps Best: 16-bit, stereo, 44.1KHz AAC at 128Kbps |
